World of Wellesley Twenty-Fourth Annual
Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast and Family Celebration:
MLK’s Legacy- A Leader, A Rebel, An Inspiration
It is such an honor to be back in Wellesley on this special day of remembrance and celebration. I will be telling stories for children and families starting at 10:45 AM. I am looking forward to seeing everyone.
The World of Wellesley will hold its Twenty-Fourth Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast and Family Celebration on Monday, January 15, 2024 at Wellesley College. This inspiring event is proudly led by The World of Wellesley, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to making Wellesley a welcoming place and committed to community empowerment through initiatives focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, accountability, justice, and anti-racism. Join us in celebrating Martin Luther King Day with a unique program that delves beyond the familiar narrative, shedding light on the lesser-known facets of MLK’s impactful legacy. Our event offers an invaluable opportunity to revisit the profound teachings and convictions of this iconic figure. By focusing on the often overlooked dimensions of MLK’s legacy, we deepen our understanding of the holistic nature of his activism. Through this exploration, we aim to spark meaningful conversations and inspire action in the realms of antimilitarism, anti-materialism, affordable housing, and poverty alleviation. The program will be held at Wellesley College, Tishman Commons (ADA compliant with access from ground floor garage). The program consists of two parts, a ticketed breakfast and discussion from 8 AM to 10:30 AM followed by a family program with free admission from 10:30 AM to 12 PM. The family program will feature interactive MLK-themed activities for children and all ages are welcome. The doors will open at 8 AM to begin breakfast and the program will start promptly. Tickets are $30 for adults and $20 for students, or a table (seating 10 people) may be purchased for $300. For each purchase made, a percentage of available seats will be reserved for community members who qualify for financial assistance. Community members with financial constraints, please email WOW at info@worldofwellesley.org. World of Wellesley is proud to have Dr. Jennifer Yanco, a racial justice educator-activist, scholar, and author as this year’s keynote speaker. Dr. Yanco’s book Misremembering Dr. King: Revisiting the Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. invites us to reconsider how Dr. King is remembered and to revisit the radicalism of his work and legacy. Copies of her book will be available for purchase.
